The Smoothed Rate of Change (Smoothed-ROC) is an advanced refinement of the Rate of Change (ROC) indicator. It was introduced in 2026 as a leading momentum indicator, designed to enhance trend analysis by measuring acceleration or deceleration. Also recommended: Prior Bar Break Odds with Level Bars and Rolling Hit Rate - similar indicator with strong performance on MetaTrader 5.
Unlike the traditional ROC, which relies on price closes, the Smoothed-ROC utilizes Exponential Moving Averages (EMAs) to smooth out erratic fluctuations. This modification makes it a more reliable tool for identifying trend strength.
The calculation process involves three steps:
- Compute the EMA.
- Determine the momentum by subtracting the previous EMA from the current EMA.
- Express the result as a percentage by dividing it by the previous EMA and multiplying by 100.
The formula is:
Smoothed-ROC = (Current EMA - Previous EMA) / (Previous EMA) x 100
Here, the 'Previous EMA' refers to the value from a specified number of periods ago. The default settings are 13 for the EMA period and 21 for the ROC period.
The Smoothed-ROC generates trading signals based on its relationship with the center line. In an uptrend, a buy signal emerges when the Smoothed-ROC dips below the center line and begins to rise. Conversely, in a downtrend, a sell signal occurs when the Smoothed-ROC crosses above the center line and starts to decline.
This indicator's strength lies in its ability to provide early signals of trend changes, making it a valuable addition to any trader's toolkit.
