The Variation Index indicator determines whether a trend, a flat movement, or random behavior prevails in a time series. Also recommended: institutional fractal dimension index (regime detector) - similar indicator with strong performance on MetaTrader 5.
Financial time series are prominent examples of fractal time functions. Their fractal structure is well-established, described by Mandelbrot as a "theoretical reformulation of a down-to-earth bit of market folklore-namely, that movements of a stock or currency all look alike when a market chart is enlarged or reduced so that it fits the same time and price scale."
Typically, the Hurst exponent is calculated to determine the fractal dimension. However, reliable calculation of the Hurst exponent requires a substantial amount of data (approximately 10^3 data points), which is often impractical given the typical duration of trading trends.
This indicator calculates the Variation Index over a user-specified interval length of 2^n, where 'n' is a parameter set by the user.
General application rules for the indicator are as follows:
- If the indicator's value is below 0.5, it signifies a trending market state.
- Extremely low values often precede the end (correction) of the current trend.
- If the indicator's value is above 0.5, it indicates a flat market state.
- Extremely high values frequently precede the commencement of significant trends.
- If the indicator's value is close to 0.5, it suggests an undefined market state.
This indicator was initially implemented in MQL4 and published on 06.10.2026.
