Some indicators function identically across various calculation lengths, while others do not. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is an example of an indicator that behaves differently. Although it is understood to oscillate within a 0-100 range, implying it is already normalized, and despite its evident utility, most analyses advise against using RSI with periods longer than 10.Also recommended: Spread Monitor Indicator for MetaTrader 5 - similar indicator with strong performance on MetaTrader 5.
The core issue with standard RSI is that as the calculation period increases, the RSI line becomes flatter. For instance, a 50-period RSI appears significantly less responsive.
This flattening makes the indicator difficult to use effectively with extended calculation periods. Various methods have been developed to address this, including smoothed RSI (which offers some improvement but eventually loses its advantage) and the Inverse Fisher Transform of RSI (which also flattens over time).
This publication introduces another approach to normalizing the RSI. The example of the 50-period RSI mentioned earlier, when normalized to a -50 to +50 range, demonstrates a marked improvement. Some previously observed issues are resolved, and crucially, the 'flattening' effect is eliminated.
Experimentation is recommended, as is typical with such analytical approaches. Consider trying this indicator in your trading strategies for 2026.
