Description & Settings

Related: Moving Average of Oscillator (OsMA) - another powerful indicator for MetaTrader 4 traders.

Moving Average Convergence/Divergence (MACD) is a trend-following dynamic indicator that measures the correlation between two price moving averages.

Also recommended: The average amplitude of the price movement for the specified period - similar indicator with strong performance on MetaTrader 4.

The MACD is calculated as the difference between a 12-period and a 26-period Exponential Moving Average (EMA). To enhance the visibility of buy/sell signals, a signal line is plotted on the MACD chart, which is a 9-period moving average of the MACD itself.

This indicator is particularly effective in volatile markets with wide price swings. Traders commonly use MACD in three ways: crossovers, overbought/oversold conditions, and divergences.

Crossovers

The primary MACD trading rule is to sell when the MACD drops below its signal line and buy when it rises above. Traders also look for crossovers above or below zero for additional buy/sell signals.

Overbought/Oversold Conditions

MACD can indicate overbought or oversold conditions. When the shorter-term moving average significantly deviates from the longer-term average (MACD rises), it suggests that the price may have overextended and could soon reverse.

Divergences

A potential trend reversal signal occurs when the MACD diverges from the security's price. A bullish divergence is when MACD makes new highs while prices fail to reach new highs, and a bearish divergence is when MACD makes new lows while prices fail to reach new lows. These divergences are more significant when they occur in overbought/oversold conditions.

Calculation:

- MACD = EMA(CLOSE, 12) - EMA(CLOSE, 26)
- SIGNAL = SMA(MACD, 9)

Where:

- EMA: Exponential Moving Average
- SMA: Simple Moving Average
- SIGNAL: Signal line of the indicator
