The Choppiness Index is a modern indicator derived from chaos theory and fractal geometry concepts. Benoit Mandelbrot significantly contributed to the widespread interest in fractal geometry, demonstrating its presence in natural phenomena like cloud formations, waves, leaves, and fingerprints. His work provided a fascinating connection between mathematics and the natural world, utilizing computer graphics to illustrate fractal geometry.

While we commonly perceive dimensions as whole numbers (1D, 2D, 3D), fractal geometry introduces fractional dimensions. These exist between the integer dimensions, allowing for a spectrum of values. Fractals essentially measure the dimensionality of a system, representing different patterns through the fractional nature of dimension.

E.W. Dreiss, an Australian trader, ingeniously applied fractal geometry to quantify security price movements. He assigned a "dimension" to price charts. A trending, linear chart could be assigned a dimension of 1, while a highly choppy, non-trending chart might be assigned a dimension of 2. Values between these represent fractional states and varying degrees of choppiness.

This indicator, updated for 2026, uses a smoothed approach to provide a clearer reading of market choppiness.
